On the professional side of things, I have been involved in I.T. for the last 23 years, and am currently working as a Network Engineer for a local government. I have worked in nearly all facets of I.T., starting out building and repairing computers in a little mom & pop computer store then moving into web design, then web development, system administration, network administration, virtualization administration, and security.
I also dabble a bit with Python scripting and Arduino programming. In fact I have a small Arduino project in the works that I plan to announce within the next couple of months.
I became interested in radio after high school, when some of the people I hung out with where into CB. I was pretty active in CB for a number of years. It wasn't until 1999 that I met anyone who was an Amateur Radio Operator, though I had heard mentions of it during my CB days.
In November, 2000, I became licensed as a no-code Technician with the call sign KG6ECW, which I still have today. In 2007, after they dropped the code requirement entirely, I upgraded to General.
Life and family happened, and I didn't really do much with the hobby for a number of years, although I kept my license up–to–date. In October, 2021, I finally upgraded to Amateur Extra. I am also an A.R.R.L. acreddited Volunteer Examiner, giving back to the amateur radio community by assisting with testing sessions.
I have been fairly active on the HF bands since the summer of 2021, working SSB and, the dreaded and hated, FT8. In January 2022 I started the CWOps CW Academy Beginner course and am in the process of learning Morse Code (CW). I've found that, even though I am just learning the code, I have developed an affection for the mode and I'm convinced that it will become my primary mode after I gain some proficiency with it.
